2026 Pantone Colour of the Year – Controversy, Confusion or Clever?

30/01/2026

For the first time in its 27-year history, the Pantone Colour of the Year is WHITE!

But not any white.

Cloud Dancer is a soft, chalky white, described as a ‘billowy, balanced white’ by Pantone and destined to sit quietly and moodily alongside the bolder, more expressive colours and materials – read warm, earthy hues, timber, stone and metals – that are featuring so prominently in our interiors today.

Contrary to some initial responses to Cloud Dancer – disappointing, bland, a non-colour – this nuanced, lofty white should be seen as a symbol of calming, quiet reflection with a valuable ability to adapt, harmonise and contrast with many other richer, bolder colours and materials. It’s the colour that enables all else to shine.

Wattyl has created a palette of Cloud Dancer iterations that interpret this clever neutral for the Australian home – one that will complement and enhance the rich, earthy hues as well as the summer pastels we are all crushing on at the moment. And given that materials and textures are such a vibrant part of our interiors, Wattyl has ensured this ‘whites’ palette is both nimble and versatile, providing nuanced scaffolding for the true stars of the interior space.

The image below reflects the current trend towards warm, earthy neutrals and natural materials such as leather, timber and jute. The application of Wattyl Moody White on all walls and ceiling creates a quietly serene backdrop to the tactile beauty of the rich timber coffee table and luxurious leather couches.

A true testament to the versatility of these billowy whites is the use of Wattyl Whiteweave (below) to introduce a calming influence on the colours and materials palette of the living space. In what could be described as ‘busy’, this space is layered with colour on colour and pattern on pattern, yet it never looks cluttered – to the contrary, the application of Whiteweave ensures a backdrop of quiet serenity, allowing each piece of art, each element of textured furniture and furnishing, to absolutely shine!

In the living space below, a warm white, in the form of Wattyl Purest White, sits quietly alongside the blond ‘timber’ laminate cabinetry and the rusty terracotta rug. The mood is one of serenity and contemplation, whereby the artworks and ceramics are allowed to shine, without overwhelming the calming ambience.

Once again, in the living space below, rustic, organic elements such as raw timber furniture, beautifully turned timber vessels, linen and jute textiles and simple earth-coloured artwork are perfectly displayed against the warm white backdrop of Wattyl Designer White. It’s the perfect hue to make both the textures and the rich, earthy tones of this setting pop.

Sample pots and swatches of each of the Wattyl ‘Cloud Dancer’ palette are available from all Wattyl Paint Centres, Mitre 10, Home Hardware and Crowies stores.

They can also be ordered online here.
