Retired policeman, Grant, has decided to sell his home of 20 years so as to buy something smaller in which he can care for his mother, who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. He decided to do some renovations on the seriously dated home, ripping out walls, ceilings and flooring, before he handed over to the tradies. On finding he couldn’t get the labour he needed, he was left with a house full of half-done jobs and a home nobody wanted to buy.
In this episode, Wendy takes on a house that is in complete disarray – walls and ceilings missing, half-finished paint jobs, mismatched floors and no main bathroom. Taking some of the fresh greens and natural materials from surrounding Terrigal as her inspiration, Wendy set about transforming this house into a modern, inviting home for the next owners.
The kitchen was given a cost-effective re-fresh by retaining existing cabinetry and layout, and simply resurfacing the benchtops, splashback and kickboards using a marble effect – which made them look like new! The palette was basically white, echoed in the basin, tapware and pendant lights, with a new pale timber flooring that continues through to the loungeroom.
The missing walls were repaired and all walls and ceilings, throughout the house, were repainted. A clean, light-reflective white – Wattyl Moody White – was chosen for all rooms, except three bedrooms, to create a sense of flow and cohesion. Wattyl I.D. Advanced ultra-low VOC interior paint was used, with Wattyl I.D. Advanced Ceiling Flat White on ceilings. A whisper quiet mint green – Wattyl Summer Bay – adorns the second bedroom, while Wattyl Iceland Moss, a tranquil sage green tint, features in bedrooms one and four.
All the interior timber doors and architraves were completely revitalised simply by applying a few coats of Wattyl Colorwood Interior Stain & Varnish.
The lounge room proved relatively simple to update – new flooring was laid, walls were painted, and window furnishings introduced. Following her instinct for a coastal boho theme, Wendy introduced decorative elements in timber and wicker and colour accents in soft blues, whites and greens.
