20/03/2025

Painting a fence is an excellent way to enhance your outdoor space while adding a layer of protection against the elements. This guide will take you through each step of the process, from preparation to final touches, ensuring a long-lasting and professional-looking finish.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you start painting, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials:

  • Wattyl Solar Guard paint (or an equivalent outdoor fence paint)
  • Synthetic paintbrushes
  • Paint roller
  • Drop sheets
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Wattyl Forest Wood Deck and Timber Cleaner
  • Fresh water for rinsing

Step 2: Preparing the Fence

Preparation is key to a smooth and durable paint finish. Follow these steps:

  • Clear the Area – Remove any plants, outdoor furniture, and obstructions near the fence.
  • Clean the Fence – If the fence is old, gray, or moldy, scrub it with Wattyl Forest Wood Deck and Timber Cleaner.
  • Rinse and Dry – Let the cleaner sit for 10-20 minutes before rinsing with fresh water. Allow the timber to dry completely before proceeding.
  • Remove Residue – Scrape off any plant residue or dirt left on the fence.

Step 3: Applying the Paint

Once the fence is clean and dry, it’s time to start painting:

  • Mix the Paint – Stir the Wattyl Solar Guard Low Sheen paint well before and during use.
  • Cut in Edges – Use a synthetic brush to paint around the edges and bottom boards of the fence.
  • Paint the Palings – Use a roller for the fence palings, ensuring the paint reaches the gaps between them.
  • Apply a Second Coat – After two hours, apply a second even coat for better durability and coverage.

Step 4: Cleanup and Disposal

After painting, follow these steps to clean up:

  • Clean brushes and rollers with water.
  • Dispose of any unused paint through the PaintBack program (visit paintback.com.au for details).
  • Ensure all equipment is stored away from drains and waterways to prevent contamination.

Painting your fence is a simple yet effective way to refresh your outdoor space.

With the right preparation, techniques, and materials, you can achieve a professional and long-lasting finish. Follow these steps carefully and enjoy your newly painted fence for years to come!
