Which gloss level do I choose for the interior of my home?

An important decision many homeowners struggle to make when selecting a wall paint is “Which gloss or sheen level is best for my painting project?”

The answer is not always straightforward as each finish has certain advantages and disadvantages. The key is to pick a finish which works best for your home aesthetically, but provides the best serviceability for the specific areas in which it is used.

Flat & Matt

Gloss Level <5 Gloss Units at a 60° angle

Flat and matt paints diffuse or scatter light and are, therefore, best at hiding surface imperfections. This makes them a good choice for internal walls which are not perfectly smooth. One downside is that they can be more difficult to wash and/or remove stains without leaving a shiny mark afterwards. A number of modern ultra premium paints, such as Wattyl I.D Advanced Matt, do offer a degree of stain resistance and washability.

Low Sheen

Gloss Level 5-20 Gloss Units at a 60° angle

Low sheen paints are the most popular all round interior wall finish. Low sheen offers significantly better washability than flat or matt finishes, without being so shiny as to highlight every single surface defect. However, in situations of extreme critical lighting (eg, a long hallway with sunlight entering in at one end), low sheen can tend to highlight some surface imperfections. It’s a great choice for living areas, dining rooms and bedrooms.

Satin Gloss

Level 20-50 Gloss Units at a 60° angle

Broadwall paints, such as Wattyl I.D Advanced Satin, offer very high washability and serviceability. They have very good moisture resistance and are the best choice in areas which require regular cleaning, such as high use domestic kitchens and wet areas like laundries and bathrooms with lower levels of ventilation.
