Deep Red Renaissance

05/09/2024

BURGUNDY, MAROON SPICE, RICH RUSSET… REDS ARE BACK!

The renaissance of the colour burgundy – and rich, deep reds in all their iterations – was front and centre at the recent Milan Salone del Mobile design fair (April 2024).  Intense, saturated colours, reminiscent of the deeply luscious hues of red wine, featured prominently in the form of sofas, rugs, lamps, furniture and wall colour.  And many were teamed with warm woods, lustrous metallics and various contrasting hues from greens, creams and greys to pinks and alabaster.

These bold, fresh new takes on red are sophisticated and exude quiet luxury. “These colours, when used for either walls or key decorative elements, can create spaces of elegance and depth,” said Katherine Champion, Wattyl’s colour expert.

“Red can be considered a statement colour, which means a little can go a long way.  We are loving these rich, deep hues used as a small accent in furnishings or decorative elements – or alternatively as a wall colour used alongside one of the many hues that work so well with them,” she said.

The pairing of Seductress (use wall colour below) with hues of ivory, alabaster or ecru as a perfect recipe for quiet elegance, especially when teamed with timber accents.

The versatility of deep reds can never be underestimated – russet reds, such as Wattyl Deep Valentine, can create nurturing, restful spaces for bedrooms when paired with verdant forest, hunter and emerald greens in luxurious fabrics such as velvets and waffle weaves.

A more modern take on burgundy is the mix of rosewood red, or brick, alongside the hues of dusty rose, taupe and soft chestnut. The look can be achieved with a layering of wall colour, soft furnishings and decorative elements in acrylic, ceramic and textiles.

And as final proof the burgundy colour palette really does have no limits!  For a nurturing, relaxing bathing space, try a mix of deepest claret or oxblood on a single wall and add a breath of calming, fresh air with eggshell, bone, pearl or alabaster in the form of painted woodwork, luxurious towels, artwork and sculptural bath.  You’ll never want to leave!
